When was the last time the internet even read a short story? Does the internet know what a short story is? Has it read one since it was required for high school English? Lets cover this breaking story in more detail. So wait, whats happening? The December 11th issue of the New Yorker features a short story called Cat Person, by Kristen Roupenian. Everyone is talking about it. By which I mean Twitter is talking about it. Whats the story about? Its about a 20-year-old college student named Margot and this guy Robert who she becomes romantically involved with. Its a third-person limited narrative focusing on Margot and her internal life. That sounds like it has sex in it. The internet loves sex. Does it have sex in it? Yes it does, but its not exactly the sexy kind of sex. So why does the internet care so much? Excellent question. I have a few theories. Theory #1: The story is illustrated with a too-close-up image of lips kissing that comes up when you share the link on social media. It kind of makes you stop and go, Eww, what? I think it may act as some kind of tractor beam. Theory #2: The internet loves cats and they expected something very different than what they got. Spoiler alert: cats are a minor plot point but thats all. (Maybe this is not true of the internet as a whole, but its certainly true for a subset of the internet and they demand a cat-focused story as recompense.) Theory #3: People dont know its fiction. This is actually becoming kind of a problem. Because Margots story sounds similar to the kind of thing youd see in a confessional personal essay, peoples initial reaction to it is to have a hot take just like they would if it was a nonfiction piece. Even if you do know that its fiction, you may react to it as if it were real. Who is Margot, is Margot a feminist, why didnt Margot do a different thing? Margot isnt real and the author has confirmed that the story is not autobiographical. So what are all the hot takes? Many women pronounce it too real. (I admit, I am one of them.) It taps very deeply into experiences many women have had where we look for ways to explain away mens bad behavior as signs that they are really good, ways women construct narratives around people they date, etc. Its also limited to the perspective of a young woman who is probably white, well-off, and attractive. So it may be relate-able, but its not universal. There are some complaints. Many have noted its fatphobic. (Margot has several critical and judgmental thoughts about Roberts body.) This is pretty legit and it probably deserves a content warning for readers who dont want to encounter fat shaming language. Margot is also pretty shallow about bodies generally, and its generating discussion about how women are conditioned to think of themselves and others. People also feel the need to say they do not like it. Because the internet hates it when people like things and everyone who doesnt like the thing feels the need to speak up and let everyone know that they definitely did not like the thing. How is the actual story? Dont ask me. Thats up to you. I liked it, I liked the pacing and the point of view and the way we get to see clearly Margots flaws and her youth and her bad decisions. I found the ending too obvious. While reading the story I was reminded of reading Difficult Women earlier this year and how I saw stories in it about women and love and sex that I had never seen before. Short stories about men obsessing about women are revered as classics, but stories from the point of view of a woman that feature love, lust, and sex still feel painfully new. I like that we get to do that for a little while. I love short stories, but I hate hot takes. Should I read it? This is Book Riot and we are pretty pro-reading-things, so if you like stories, yes. Read it. You are welcome to read it and then not read any of the hot takes. In fact, you can read it and you dont even have to tell anyone you read it. You can read it and then carry the knowledge that you read it to your grave with you. But the internet really needs my particular hot take, which I promise is not at all similar to any of the million hot takes generated thus far. I mean, if it means that much to you, go ahead and have your take. Is this going to change the landscape of short stories as we know it? That remains to be seen. I would love to see us talk more about short stories the way we talk about novels and movies and other things we love to dissect online. Maybe the hot takes are not so bad. Maybe serious conversation about short fiction is exactly what we need right now. To help myself adapt to the change, I became as involved as I possibly could.I joined clubs, did volunteer work and also played three sports all while maintaining a job. Being this involved I was nervous I would become overwhelmed and thought it would be easy to loose my focus with academics but I knew that I couldnââ¬â¢t let that happen. My grades really improved and I was able to manage all of my activities and always get my school work done. This will definitely benefit me in college because I know that I will be as involved as possible and that i will still maintain the motivation to get ll my work done and take care of every single of my responsibilities I develop in college. North Kansas City is not only a bigger school that I am used to, but also a very diverse school. We represent people from about thirty six different countries. I have developed close relationships with people from places I have never even heard of. At North Kansas City high school there are so many opportunities, every individual person seems like they have found comfort there. I know I have found many things to be involved in. When I get in college I know there will be people all over the world and for most it will be a huge culture shock. Being surrounded by people with different backgrounds and all walks of life and my experience with going to one of the most diverse schools in the country will help me understand people and where they are all coming from. Often times this leads to complicated coordination of activities between chefs and waiters. This also means that other tedious tasks, such as inventory checks, fall to the managers to perform. This project seeks to introduce associated with current restaurant management practices. Overall Description propose a software solution to the above problems which would allow the restaurant management to be easier and offer more coordination for the everyday work. A touch screen will be used by the staff to log in and complete the desired task. The supported employee roles are: Host, Waiter, Cook, Busboy and Manager. The various employees have user accounts and login using their passwords they need to member except the cook. Logging in and out will be exploited as triggering events to update and organize the data. When a person enters the restaurant the host will greet the customer and log in to see the tables that are free. The host can also show the floor status to the customer for their preference (e. G. If the customer prefers a free table near the window etc. ). After being seated the assigned waiter for that particular table takes over from the host and takes the order from the customer on a PDA. The order is seen by the cooks in the kitchen who can right away start preparing the order. After the customer is done eating they are billed and the order is archived in the database for calculation of the restaurant revenues for that day/month/year. This also allows preparing easy statistics regarding high patron service hours etc. The Busboy who checks the table status can then take care of the dirty table and after he is done cleaning can mark them as ready to use in the system. The manager has administrative power over employee profiles. They can do the following: 1. The ability to create and modify profiles 2. Track employee activities 3. Authorize restricted waiter activities. We will take into account the number of clicks that are necessary to accomplish the individual tasks and try to minimize the number of clicks for efficient deployment of our system. Product perspectives system will consist of two parts: one mobile application and one web portal. The mobile application will be used to view table status, enter customers orders, view orders information and status. The web portal will be used for managing restaurant information, staff information, and data analysis. Since this is a data-centric product it will need somewhere to store the data. For that, a database will be used. Both the mobile application and the web portal will communicate with the database. Both the mobile application and the web portal will be able to get, add and modify data in the database. All of the database communication will go over a LANA. Product functionalist the mobile application, the user will be able to modify personal information, add orders, view or modify orders and table status and information, depending on the users position in the restaurant: Hosts and bus boys will be able to view and update table status. Table status will be displayed in a map of the restaurants floors, based on their real location in the assistant. Table status can also be modified on this map. There will 3 table statuses: Ready, Occupied and Dirty. Waiters will be able to add and modify orders. The menus items will be displayed in a list view, with a check box, a quantity field and a note field on each of the item. When the waiter press the Create Order button, the order will be created and submitted to the database. Waiters can also edit and cancel orders upon customers requests. After customers finished the food, waiters can also generate bills base on the orders. Chefs will be able to view incoming orders and modify order status. Orders will be display in a list, which is sorted base on the time of the orders. The orders will also be grouped base on their items for easy preparation. After the order is completed, the chefs will have to update the order status, and a notification will be sent to the waiters. The web portal will provide functionality to manage the system, the restaurant data, and staff information. The web portal will also provide a variety of report generating tools. The reports analysis will consist of by-the-day and by-the-hour breakdowns of: ; Revenue and revenue percentage per menu item ; Menu item popularity ; Personnel efficiency Average turnaround time ; Average preparation time User characteristically are two types of users that interact with the system: users of the mobile application and the system administrators. All mobile application users can use the application to modify personal information. Users are also able to view, add or modify orders and table status depending on their position at the restaurant. Users can also retrieve lost password through email. The administrators will not use the mobile application but the web portal instead. There they will manage the information about the restaurant such as menus, table maps and employees accounts. The web portal will also provide administrators with report generating tools for management purpose. Constraints LANA connection is a constraint for the mobile application. Since the application fetches and modifies data from the database over the LANA, it is crucial that there is a stable LANA connection for the application to function. Both the web portal and the mobile application will be constrained by the capacity of the database. Since the database is shared between both applications, it may be forced to queue incoming requests and therefore increase the time it takes to fetch data. How the Star Spangled Banner Became the Anthem On March 3, 1931, U.S. President Herbert Hoover signed an act that officially made The Star Spangled Banner the national anthem for the United States. Before this time, the United States had been without any national anthem. History of "The Star Spangled Banner" The words of The Star Spangled Banner were first written on September 14, 1814 by Francis Scott Key as a poem titled, The Defence of Fort McHenry. Key, a lawyer and an amateur poet, was being detained on a British warship during the British naval bombardment of Baltimores Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. When the bombardment subsided and Key witnessed that Fort McHenry was still flying its huge American flag, he began writing his poem. (Historical Note: This flag was truly huge! It measured 42 by 30 feet!) Key recommended that his poem be sung as a song to the popular British tune, To Anacreon in Heaven. It soon became known as The Star Spangled Banner. Becoming the National Anthem The Star Spangled Banner was published in a number of newspapers at the time, but by the Civil War it had become one of the most popular patriotic songs of the United States. By the late 19th century, The Star Spangled Banner had become the official song of the U.S. military, but it wasnt until 1931 that the United States made The Star Spangled Banner the official national anthem of the country. Believe It or Not Interestingly, it was Robert L. Ripley of Ripleys Believe It or Not! that spurred the interest of the American people to demand The Star Spangled Banner to become the official national anthem. On November 3, 1929, Ripley ran a panel in his syndicated cartoon stating that Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. Does what appears to be normal equal reality? By looking at two different films it seems that the old cliche stands correct. Things arenââ¬â¢t as they appear. American Beauty and The Virgin Suicides give classic examples of how ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠and ââ¬Å"happyâ⬠suburban life is anything but. American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes (1999) and The Virgin Suicides, directed by Sofia Coppola (2000), share many of the same themes even though the plots are contrasted. Underneath the layers of white picket fences, beautiful houses, and safe neighborhoods, lies a truth. A truth so dark that it leads to the destruction of many characters in both of these movies. The first element that must be looked at is the imprisonment of the characters in both films. The main character of American Beauty, Lester Burnham, is the man whom feels the burden of imprisonment the most. He is in an ongoing marriage that should be coming up to the red light. He is also stuck in a job where he feels under appreciated and not well respected. He has been at this job for fourteen years. That is fourteen years of being in jail. It is quite evident that he is not happy. Who would be when you know that your wife and you daughter think that you are a ââ¬Å"gigantic loserâ⬠(American Beauty)? Lester is not the only character who suffers from this. His wife Carolyn and daughter Jane both know what it is like to feel trapped in an unhappy life. Carolyn is imprisoned by image. She has the notion that she cannot be happy unless everything appears as perfect. And Jane, feeling the weight of her parents, wants to break off from her prison, her home life. She like most teens views her parents as weird and wants out of that life. In The Virgin Suicides the characters that are the most imprisoned are the five Lisbon sisters.
